Remy Pannier, Bateliers de Loire, Muscadet
Produced in the western Loire Valley by Rémy Pannier, a co-operative that has been making wine in the area since 1928. This wine is made from the often-overlooked Melon de Bourgogne grape that was brought to the region after a devastating frost in 1709 that destroyed so many other vines. The variety originates in Burgundy but was destroyed in this region in the 18th century. The wines from this variety are now often just called Muscadet to symbolise the area where they now reside. The “sur lie” means to age the wine in tank on yeast lees which is a regional signature. Historically it was used to help wines survive long river journeys down the Loire, as the lees acted as an anti-oxidant.
