Martin Codax Albarino

I love the Albarino grape variety. To me, the freshness and approachability of these wines make them a fantastic white wine to enjoy early in the evening. New Zealand does not make much of this variety but this is slowly changing. However, the Rias Baixas area is where the most famous examples are made. It is a great introduction to life in that area.

Martin Codax is an Albarino specialist. Where he grows his Albarinio in the Rias Baixas is like no other part of Spain. It is greener and cooler and it is exposed to the weather from the Atlantic and the salt in the air off the sea. The thick-skinned Albarino thrives in this environment getting to higher levels of sugar while maintaining high acid levels. The name Martin Codax comes from one of the region’s trobadours of the middle ages who wrote about love, the land and the coast.
