This is truely a unique and exciting wine and one I am sure that most of you would never have heard of. Freisa (Latin for strawberry) is a lesser-known red grape variety native to the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It is known for producing wines that are typically medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity and a range of flavour profiles that can include red fruits like cherries and raspberries. One of the distinctive characteristics of Freisa is its often slightly tannic structure, which can give the wines a robust mouthfeel.
Maison Noire is a tiny producer growing grapes on the road out to the beach at Waimarama in Hawke’s Bay. French winemaker, Guillaume Thomas, originates from the Loire Valley but love has kept him here making a “french taste of NZ.”
Try this wine with some Asian food, it will stand up to some spicey options as well. Delicious!
