Donnafugata “SurSur” Grillo

Grillo is one of the many rare grape varieties native to Sicily (that southernmost volcanic island just touching the toe of Italy's boot on a map). The word Grillo also happens to be the Italian word for cricket. No, friends, nothing to do with the best sport in the world. But, the little Grillo is considered to be a lucky creature in Italian custom. When you taste a wine or two made from Grillo, you start to understand where the grape may have gotten its name. These white wines are expressive, almost chirruping with lively fruit and floral character, and with a bouncy acidity. Donnafugata, co-founded by the Sicilian wine pioneer Giacomo Rallo, is one of the wineries credited with helping to reinvigorate and raise the bar for wines of this small and once-forgotten corner of Italy. A mere couple decades ago, most of the world had never tasted or really cared about Sicilian wines. Now you will find Sicilian wines on wine bar and restaurant lists from Hong Kong to New York to…Hastings and Napier. 
While Sicily is an incredibly hot part of the world–the island also has an active volcano lighting up many a night–the wines from this region can be incredibly fresh and vibrant, but powereful and expressive at the same time. This delicate balance is largely what makes Sicilian wines so inviting and interesting.
