Decibel Malbec

A straight Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels is relatively rare. It would be an interesting comparison to try this wine alongside the Argentinian Malbec. This version has plenty to offer but wound up a little more tightly in the Gimblett Gravels way.

The Gimblett Gravels, where this wine originates, is now a well-known sub-region of Hawke’s Bay. It is famed for its very stony soils and ability to ripen red varieties successfully. Most of the area is planted in Merlot, Syrah and the Cabernet Family however 7% of the 800 hectares are planted as Malbec which is mainly used for blending. Decibel Dan, winemaker and owner of this innovative small label, likes to do things a little differently. Originally from the US, Dan has made Hawke’s Bay home and he is creating wines with a community spirit in mind. He also talks about sense memory and sense elation and the ability of a wine to transport the consumer to a different place. A place of adventure and discovery! This wine is classic Gravels. Ripe fruit with a structured, fine-grained tannin profile that so many of the wines from the area possess.
