Bodegas Hidalgo “La Gitana” Sherry

La Gitana: "The Gypsy Woman." If you're only ever going to try one good Sherry in your whole life, it should probably be this one. It's the best-selling Manzanilla Sherry in Spain, and also largely considered the definitive example of Manzanilla by enthusiasts and experts around the world. Really, if you want to understand dry Sherry, start here.

The world of Sherry is complex and totally geek-worthy. We’re talking blended wines whose base origin wine dates back (in the case of this one) to the 19th century. Wines that walk the line between what we might think of as “typical” dry wines and something different. Something special. Sherry is for many a forgotten world. But even you’re not really into all the nerdy stuff, it’s most definitely a wine worth exploring with your glass.

In fact, Manzanilla Sherry is one of the most food friendly wines out there–dry and delicate, expressive and incredibly nuanced and just a wee bit salty. Often, people in Spain will drink Manzanilla Sherry as an aperitif before a meal–to open up their taste buds and get their appetites ready. You’ll often see people in bars in the mid afternoon enjoying a glass of Manzanilla with a wee bowl of Marcona almonds, brined olives or even potato chips. This wine is just phenomenal with anything a little salty. In fact, it’s just really delicious in general. No wonder it’s the flagship wine of Bodegas Hidalgo, one of the few remaining independent Sherry producing houses.
