Tenuta Ulisse Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
For many years, Abruzzo was a wee bit overlooked when it came to fine wine, the assumption being that wines from this region were middling to alright–reds like Montepulciano being allocated to “pizza wine” status. (And hey, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a good Montepulciano and a good pizza. In fact, now that we think about it, the commentary on Montepulciano’s food-friendliness is a compliment.) But wineries like Tenuta Ulisse are now energing as new pioneers in Abruzzo, with the mission to reveal the enormous potential of Abruzzo’s unique terroir and ancient varieties–like Monty!
You can clearly see their effort rewarded in this bottle. Deep, dark fruit notes and rich layers, offset with just the right amount of acidity. Quite something for a wine that sees no oak whatsoever. All that complexity is coming purely from the fruit. This wine is a clear cut above most Montepulcianos you find out there; a true pleasure to have at the table. And if you like it with dinner, try to save a drop or two for dessert and try it with dark chocolate!
