Mount Edward Grüner Veltliner

Classy, succulent, fruity (but not overly so), spicy, fresh, delightfully dry and laced with a clean mineral edge. We could have been describing you...but we were actually talking about this gorgeous example of Grüner Veltliner. Not from its original homeland of Austria, but an exciting South Island version from one of our favourite wineries, Mount Edward. These guys always deliver.

You might by now be familiar with the Grüner Veltliner variety. This most classic of Austrian wine grapes has found a firm home for itself in NZ, though in total, we still only have about 46 hectares planted. Vibrating with bright acidity, Grüner, as it’s affectionately called, often also has a noticeable textured depth and a lovely pinch of spice. And this one certainly meets the mustard (and the sausage to go with it…as a matter of fact, have that with a glass, and thank us later.) Mount Edward in Central Otago has been working with this variety for a while now, with their grapes coming from a tiny 0.5 hectare single vineyard plot in the foothills of the Pisa ranges. It’s rewarding to see their efforts literally coming to maturity in this bottle. Farmed and vinfied organically and using low intervention to create a wine of provenance and style.
