Montrubi “White” Xarel-lo

Xarel-lo (pronounced “chah-REHL-loh”) is to Catalunya what Chardonnay is to Hawke’s Bay. Important and beloved and versatile. Catalunya is in the northeastern part of Spain (though they don’t really claim being a willing part of the country). For Catalan locals, 100% still Xarel-lo is the white wine of choice, and can be made to express subtlety and terroir in extremely nuanced ways. Never overly fruity, this is a wine with clean minerality and a fresh, herbacious, pineapple peel and green apple character. Tantalizingly, slightly textural, refreshing and food friendly!

One of Spain’s finest wine producing regions, the officially recognized wine region (DO) of Penedès is located in Catalunya, less than an hour’s drive from Barcelona. Here is where you will find the heart of sparkling Cava production (for which Xarel-lo is one of the three major grapes used), in addition to some fantastic red wines. In fact, Montrubi makes both brilliant sparkling wines and delicious red wines in addition to their white wine production. But if you really want to understand the true wine spirit of Penedes, and drink like the locals do, start here with this pure and classic example of Xarel-lo.

This is 100% varietal Xarel-lo from vines planted in 1974 on some of Montrubi’s coveted mountainous, rocky, high altitude vineyard sites (the best soils for grapes are often poor, rocky, free-draining and with a wide temperature swing between day and night). All of these elements come together in the bottle to make a classic “white” wine of the region that Montrubi is understandably quite proud of.
