Meerlust “Rubicon” Red Blend

Many years ago while doing a vintage in South Africa we were lucky enough to come across the great wines of Meerlust. The Rubicon is one of their spectacular wines. If you are a lover of Bordeaux then this is the wine for you.

Meerlust, translating to “pleasure of the sea” due to its close proximity to the False Bay has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756. Rubicon is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It gets its name from the Rubicon River outside Italy. It was at this river that Julius Ceasar was supposed to have said “the die is cast” as he led his troops over the river to Rome. There was no turning back. In 1980 Nico Myburgh went to Bordeaux and when he returned he made the decision to make a wine as close as possible to those he saw in Bordeaux. Together with his winemaker, they crossed the new frontier and changed how South Africans thought of red wine. The wine is a classic Bordeaux blend style with soft ripe fruit and interesting tobacco flavours. The tannins are very approachable.
