Les Heretiers du Comte Lafon “Clos de la Crochette” Macon Chardonnay

A wine from maybe the oldest Chardonnay growing site in the world makes it pretty special. Matching this with a superstar winemaker makes this certainly one to try. Splash out, it is worth it!

In 1999 Dominique Lafon, a Burgundy superstar decided to create a biodynamic Maconnais domain where he could continue to produce incredible wines from the Chardonnay grape. He purchased parcels of old vines in the higher parts of the region and focused on quality. The walled Clos de la Crochette is a 2.6 hectares vineyard planted in 1987. It is thought that this vineyard site may have been one of the first ever planted to Chardonnay by the monks of the nearby Abbaye de Cluny. The wines are treated in the same way as Lafon’s super rare and super expensive wine from the Cote d’Or. The wine is poised and elegant with great structure and balance. As usual though, it does possess a concentration and depth to the wine that makes me reach for the glass over and over again.
