Domaine des Pothiers “Eclipse” Methode Ancestrale

Dangerously delicious is what this is. Take a taste of this enchanting Gamay-based pink bubbly and you're likely to say, "ooh, la-la" and take another. But it's not just the delightfully fruity character of this "Pet Nat" that makes it so appealing. There is real delicacy, a savoury hint and a zing of acidity that all harmonize to leave you salivating and eager for another sip.

Domaine des Pothiers is a really exciting winery in a tiny, easily overlooked gem of a region (those are the sorts we like best) called the Côte-Roannaise. This little area is at the far south-eastern end of the Loire Valley in France–very close to the source of the river in fact, and also quite close to the regions of Beaujolais and the Rhone valley. The soils here are all granite, and the Gamay variety rules (Gamay loves good granite.) The vineyards of Domaine des Pothiers have been in Romaine Paire’s family for generations, and he is now getting some serious recognition for the graceful, innovative wines he’s producing.

Methode Ancestrale wines (also known as Pet Nats) are the original sparkling wine (this is how they made sparkling wine before they knew how to do it any other way), and it’s a technique that creates a very finely-beaded, delicate style of bubbles. This one is made from a type of Gamay specific to the Côte-Roannaise region, called Gamay Saint Romaine, which Domaine des Pothiers happen to grow particularly well.
